No doctor referral? No problem.
With direct access, you don’t need to see a doctor to get a physical therapy referral before coming to us.
Originally, before seeing a physical therapist, you needed to be referred by your physician. In January 2014, California made the Direct Access law, which allows people to go straight to their preferred individual physical therapist for care without consulting a doctor first for a physical therapy referral. This option is ideal for people who want to self-pay instead of going through their insurance. Skipping a doctor’s visit will allow for a quicker, more streamlined road to recovery, and in many cases, seeing a physical therapist first can even result in fewer overall treatment sessions. We call this a win-win.
You should also be aware that under the Direct Access legislation, if it is determined that a patient’s physical therapy treatment will exceed 45 days or 12 visits, whichever comes first, then patients must be referred to a licensed healthcare provider.
