QUICK TIPS: Protecting Yourself from a Fall

The human balance consists of the eyes, inner ears, muscles, and central nervous system.

When any piece of this network isn’t functioning correctly, you are more at risk of falling. Over time, this system becomes less conditioned, and we must generally take more care to prevent the risk of falls. These helpful fall prevention tips are easy to incorporate into your daily life and can significantly reduce your risk of falling.

  1. Remove throw rugs to prevent tripping.
  2. Pick up or tape over electrical cords or wires that lay across walkways.
  3. Install grab bars to help you get into and out of the shower or tub.
  4. Place non-skid mats on the floor of the shower or tub.
  5. Place night lights along paths that are used when you get up in the middle of the night, especially along the way to the bathroom.
  6. Place a lamp next to your bed for easy access.
  7. When getting out of bed, take your time and sit at the edge of the bed to avoid getting light-headed.
  8. Exercise regularly, and if you are not comfortable with exercise, ask your physical therapist or physician about a fall prevention program.
